Alexis Rockman
The Alexis Rockman art work available here is a signed limited edition poster of a mural of Manifest Destiny he created in 2004. The artist spoke about the mural shortly after its creation in an event hosted by NNYN called "Human/Nature: Art and the Environment," and donated signed prints to the nonprofit at that time. Proceeds from the sale of these prints will go to the Nurture Nature Foundation, of which NNYN is now a part, which is dedicated to protecting the environment while maintaining sustainable development, to help the world a more secure and hospitable place for present and future generations
The mural represents downtown Brooklyn as seen from the eastern shore of Manhattan around the year 5000. The work was inspired by illustrations of plants and animals culled from science journals and textbooks; installation shots of dioramas from the American Museum of Natural History in Manhattan, Frederic Edwin Church’s The Natural Bridge, Virginia (1852), Thomas Cole’s The Course of Empire (1836); paintings of the Hudson River School; film stills from science fiction movies (like the sequence of frames of Times Square, flooded and destroyed, from When Worlds Collide; and press photos of demolished and bombed-out buildings. Rockman engaged with ecologists, paleontologists, biologists, archaeologists, and architects to create the painting. The original mural is 8ft x 24ft and is owned by The Smithsonian American Art Museum. A full-sized replica is available for viewing at the Nurture Nature Center.
