The trouble with cormorants. Arthur Kill, Staten Island

The Double-Crested Cormorant is one of NYC's most resilient and adaptive and beautiful birds in the northeastern United States and Canada. Proliferating in fresh, estuarine and coastal waters, the species nest on islands and man-made structures throughout NY harbor. Here, the birds reproduce colonially on the ancient wooden ship yards of the Arthur kill, in the heart of NY's industrial port. The cormorant is currently considered a menace to the rarer herons, egrets and ibises that compete for nesting spaces on NY's islands as well as to the native vegetation. The effects of these birds on NY's delicate harbor ecology are being closely monitored by Queens College and NNYN collaborator Dr John Waldman.
