Manhattan. House finch feeds on suet.
The House finch, originally from the West coast, escaped as a cage bird to the East United States at the beginning of last century and has since evolved into two successful and distinct populations, one migratory, the other sedentary. It is believed a mycoplasma, common in fowl, was the principle selective agent driving this split in behavioral patterns, a switch now thought to be hereditary…Natural selection in action!
