Female (brown) and male (white and deep purple) Buffleheads use their stout and sturdy beaks to pry aquatic snails, arthropods and/or aquatic vegetation free from their anchors and roots.

Waterfowl can be loosely categorized by what - and how- they eat. Not to mention the shape of their bills. Most ducks are relatively omnivorous, eating both aquatic plants and animals. Some specialize in fish, mussels; others on eel grass. Some on fresh water fare, others on seafood. Dabbling ducks (such as mallards) feed exclusively by filtering the water's surface or by 'up-ending', somewhat clumsily.
