NNYN in Tristate Region Biodiversity Conference Launch

Nurture New York's Nature is among a coalition of environmental, community educational and scientific organizations that helped host the first conference to survey biodiversity in the Tri-State region. The conference, The State of the Tri-State Region's Nature, was held at the Graduate Center at CUNY on April 13 and 14. It also launched the "Nature Network" coalition to survey the region's biodiversity and ensure its long-term protection.

The State of the Tri-State Region's Nature conference involved over three dozen groups who presented status reports on amphibians and reptiles, birds, fish, invertebrates, mammals, plants and the major ecosystems of the area. They will identify challenges to effective preservation and the ecological merits of biodiversity. Leading environmental specialists talked about working effectively with government and others and proposed strategies for increasing the weight of healthy ecosystems in business and government decisions.

Speakers described approaches to effective public education and both speakers and attendees participated in facilitated workgroups to develop approaches for Nature Network's research, education and outreach programs.

In addition to NNYN members, the Nature Network presently consists of staff members from the American Museum of Natural History, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Cazenovia College, City University of New York, Fordham University, Nature Conservancy, New York Botanical Garden, New York City Audubon, NYC Department of Environmental Protection, NYC Parks, New York University, Ramapo College of NJ, Regional Plan Association, Wildlife Conservation Society, WildMetro and Wildlife Trust, among others.
