Documentarist Albert Maysles is Recording the Process

The week after one of the worst snow storms in recent history the Central Park has been busy. Not just to clear the snow but to get ready for the most ambitious project in the history of the Park - The Gates, Project for Central Park.

Although Christo and Jeanne-Claude have repeatedly warned against delays because of bad weather, they are forearmed. They have purchased 150 snow shovels and 500 pounds of calcium chloride just in case they have to dig through the snow to spot the painted icons that indicate where the bases are to be placed. In any case, there is still no concern that The Gates will not open as scheduled on February 12.

The frenzy with which Christo and Jeanne-Claude are attempting to complete the project is being documented by filmmaker Albert Maysles in a work that will detail how the artists have created the Gates. The documentary, which is being shot in 16mm and DV, will also include footage of how the project has evolved since the early 1980s when Maysles first began documenting the project.

Albert Maysles has already made five films about Christo and Jeanne-Claude's previous projects ("Christo's Valley Curtain," "Running Fence," "Islands," "Christo in Paris," and "Umbrellas"). In an interview last August with indieWIRE, a film trade magazine, Maysles said that The Gates documentary will be unlike the others as it's a "double-dose of art." "As people respond to the art, there will be thousands who will see the gates, and millions who will see the film, as Christo and Jeanne-Claude see it that's all part of the project," he said.
