Petrochemicals Carve New Approaches

Scientists have long suggested that the Earth is warming because of the reckless burning of fossil fuels, and that the consequent release of carbon dioxide is causing the so-called 'greenhouse effect'. But for the longest time, lobbies, organized in the US and funded largely by the petrochemical, mining and automotive industries have employed scientists and publicists to counter every warning, suggesting that these suggestions are alarmist and unsubstantiated. The campaigns threw doubt on global warming, saying that even if it was true, it was due to natural causes.

But with more evidence about global warming, its causes and its impact, the petrochemical companies have announced their own initiatives to ameliorate the effects of global warming and adopt a more ecologically industrial style. In the first of a series that examines how various corporations are attempting to nurture nature, we focus on Chevron, Exxon Mobil and BP.

Chevron says:

At Chevron, we share the concerns of governments and the public about climate change. We developed a formal, business-driven climate change strategy in 2001, comprising a fourfold action plan outlined in the table below. We have reviewed our approach in light of developments in science, technology and global policy and believe it continues to be robust and appropriate.

· Reducing emissions of greenhouse gases and increasing energy efficiency

· Investing in research, development and improved technology

· Pursuing business opportunities in promising, innovative energy technologies

· Supporting flexible and economically sound policies and mechanisms that protect the environment

Exxon Mobil says:

ExxonMobil recognizes the importance of conserving biodiversity - the variety of life on earth. Our systematic approach to environmental management and our commitment to understanding the human and natural environments in which we work provide us with a framework to meet these challenges effectively.

We live up to our commitment to the conservation of biodiversity by implementing such principles as applying high standards in all areas we operate, planning and implementing biodiversity action initiatives, and participating in philanthropic efforts such as the Save the Tiger Fund.

Through such dedication to conservation, ExxonMobil will help Protect Tomorrow. Today.

BP says:

There is evidence that the earth's temperature is rising. This may be linked to an increasing frequency of extreme weather conditions that could have a profound impact on the environment and the quality of human life

There is an emerging consensus that climate change is, at least in part, linked to the production and consumption of carbon based fuels. As a major supplier of these fuels it's only right that we play a part in finding and implementing solutions to one of the greatest challenges of this century.
