Nature of New York: Its Natural History and Environment was first offered by CUNY's School of Professional Studies in 2005. The success of the course and the enthusiastic response to it has now prompted the School of Professional Studies to offer it online for the first time.

In its classroom offering Nature of New York included topics such as New York's geological origins and terrain, geography, hydrology and climate, and the vast array of plants and animals in local habitats. It also discussed ongoing environmental issues such as biodiversity, ecological consequences of introduced species and effects of urban sprawl and habitat fragmentation on wildlife. Case studies included the role of environmental activism in attempts to remediate pollution, and how the New York region spawned America's environmental movement. The online course expects to develop the themes that emerged from the classroom offering and more.
