Go Wild in New York City, the acclaimed National Geographic children's book and classroom package, will soon become a national project with Go Wild in the City, spreading the concepts and techniques of place-based [environmental] science education to homes and classrooms across the United States. The Go Wild Project is, an initiative of the non-profit Nurture Nature Foundation (NNF) in association with the Columbia University Teachers College.

The Go Wild Project's books, teachers' resources and web sites, are the brainchild of a team assembled by Ted Kheel, president of NNF. "It was only natural that we decided to bring Go Wild to a national audience and schools around the country," said Kheel. "More than half the population of the earth lives in cities of one million or more, and children are the future of those places on which we depend for health and happiness. Go Wild in the City, our local ecology resource inserts, and teachers' web sites will set them on a course toward making good decisions about their environment and encouraging sustainable development."

Students in each educational system that becomes part of the Go Wild Project will receive specially created material on the water, air, geology, plants, animals, food and garbage that make up the ecology on which the inhabitants of their city depend on for their health and happiness. Their teachers will have access to on-line and hard-copy classroom and activity guides, and an on-line course to train them in the use of the Go Wild concept, all developed by the Columbia Teachers' College.
