Why does Nature matter to New Yorkers? On December 2 the question will be posed to a gathering of urban and natural history writers by CIRCE, the CUNY Institute for Research on the City Environment at Queens College. The conference, the first in a series on New York's environment, will be held at Lira Hall in Queens College on Friday December 2 and begin at 9 a.m.

Nature plays a special role in the life on New York, an urban metropolis with some of the most extensive parklands and shore lines. Indeed, the compromising of nature in urban settings only magnifies its importance, says CIRCE, which has received major financial support from Ted Kheel and the Nurture Nature Foundation. And a discussion of the significance of Nature to New York, the world's large urban center, can only heighten consciousness of the problem and solutions.

New York was sited and later grew because of its superb natural resources, many of which have been lost or diminished because of that growth. Around Gotham, oyster reefs are no longer found, large carnivores and beaver ponds are a distant memory, and most salt marshes were landfilled decades ago. Nonetheless, through either management efforts or sheer tenacity, a surprising variety of animals and plants survive and even flourish within city limits, from peregrine falcons that swoop among Manhattan's spires, to seals, porpoises, and giant sturgeon that swim New York Harbor and the Hudson, to orchids that bloom in Staten Island marshes.

The speakers at the conference include: Tony Hiss, William Kornblum, Mark Kurlansky, Phillip Lopate, Anne Matthews, David Rosane, and Robert Sullivan.
