Hunter's Ni-Meister, Solecki and Gong to be Honored at NNYN/CUNY'S Peer Award Ceremony

Hunter College's Wenge Ni-Meister, William Solecki and Hongmian Gong, the first recipients of the CUNY PEER award, are to be honored at the Carriage House for their project to use satellite data and study how the local climate and environment of the city is affected by urban land use.

"New satellite remote sensing technology not only provides us a consistent means to monitor land surface states such as vegetation cover at high-resolution spatial and temporal scale but also provide us valuable information on climate variables," the researchers noted in their proposal. Ni-Meister, the project director, is an assistant professor of geography at Hunter College. Solecki is a professor of Geography and Gong an assistant professor of Geography.

The analysis of environmental and ecological systems has long been hampered by the lack of data availability. But a few recent programs funded by the National Science Foundation have significantly changed the thinking on this matter. The Hunter project hopes to increase the amount of ecological and environmental data for the city and make it available to researchers and others. "The role of science in society is at a turning point. Given the rapid rate of environmental change and pressure for enhancing the prospects for sustainability, scientific practice has attempted to forge a closer relationship with practitioners, decision-makers and activists who can use study results and data to forward their own progressive agendas," the researchers noted.
