NNYN Course at CUNY a Natural Hit

NNYN, in partnership with the City University of New York (CUNY) has begun offering its first course, based on the book, The Nature of New York, written by David Rosane, to the more than 400,000 students served by CUNY's 19 colleges. The course is also reaching out to New York City High School Students through CUNY's College Now program and to the general public. More than 100 students have enrolled in the initial presentation.

To develop the course, CUNY faculty worked closely with Rosane and NNYN staff to create the specific course content and fieldwork component, campus based events and competitions, and a robust website.

In the course of 18 trips over September and October weekends, Rosane and his students covered wide-ranging areas - from the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge and Inwood Park to New Jersey's Greenbrook Sanctuary and Oakland Lake and Alley Pond in Queens. The explorers observed migrating raptors, butterflies and birds and examined geological formations such as moraines. And they discussed the unique composite biogeography of New York City as well as its ecological footprint. And issues of environmental ethics and justice. One weekend the group traveled to Flushing Meadows Park and to the Asian fish market on Flushing's Main Street to look at local and regional pollutants as well the implications of the "flow" of a contemporary mega city.

The website, Exploring the Nature of New York, can be found at http://cs.gc.cuny.edu/~nature.
