National Geographic to Publish Go Wild in New York City
in January
The National Geographic Society which is publishing Go Wild
in New York City has marked January 21st 2005 as the publication
date.
Created by author Brad Matsen and publisher Jessica Marshall,
Go Wild is a book on a mission: to reveal the nature in and
around New York to children and their parents. Both the book
and the accompanying website aim to inspire deep appreciation
for the natural environment - and to make it easy to get involved
in nurturing New York's nature.
The narrative of the book leads children on a journey of discovery,
presenting them with everyday things, then getting them to look
deeper. The book includes hands-on activities for children to
do at home or in their own neighborhoods that build on key topics.
The book is made of a waterproof, paperless, recyclable material
and spiral-bound, allowing the book to lie flat when open, fit
in a backpack, and stand up to a hundred muddy trips.
Here's what they are saying about Go Wild.
"Go Wild in New York City is a wonderful idea. It can bring
light and the excitement of adventure to children in the real
world where most live. And draw them to science education. I
got my own start as a biologist on "expeditions" in the heart
of Washington, D.C., when I was 9 years old, and would have
been inspired by your book."
E.O. Wilson. Professor and Curator of Entomology at the Museum
of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University.
"This imaginative book introduces children to the bounty of
New York City and its earthly treasures - the waterways, natural
resources and wildlife that bring it to life. New York is brimming
with science in the most unexpected places. What a wonderful
resource for families, teachers, and backyard explorers of all
ages."
Joan Ganz Cooney, founder, Children's Television Workshop
"This book is a ticket to a great adventure to see the city
with new eyes: Explore its fascinating nature. Go Wild in New
York and the city will never seem the same again. A book for
children of all ages!"
Thomas Lovejoy. President, H. John Heinz III Center for Science
