CUNY and NNYN in Historic Alliance

The City University of New York (CUNY) and Nurture New York's Nature have formed a unique alliance to promote awareness of the importance of nurturing the nature of New York City. The alliance, announced by CUNY Chancellor Matthew Goldstein and NNYN President Theodore Kheel, will sponsor research, academic courses, student activities, field trips, events, public awareness campaigns and a range of other programs to encourage New Yorkers to explore and care for their city. To support the programs of the alliance, Kheel has awarded a grant of $1 million in four annual installments.

CUNY is also creating a permanent Institute to Nurture New York's Nature to be based in Queens College. The Institute will review and refine the recent CUNY course based on the book Nature of New York by David Rosane, plan for its offering again in the spring of 2005 and future academic terms. It also will work on the conversion of the course for delivery online to students and the general public; its expansion as an offering to CUNY's graduate students; and modify it for delivery to New York City High School Students through CUNY's College Now program.

The strategic alliance also expects to play an important role in fostering environmental interest, literacy and leadership in communities that need it the most and in shaping and influencing public policy.
