NNYN was founded on the occasion of The Gates, the extraordinary work of art by Christo and Jeanne Claude, which transformed Central Park, and changed New Yorkers' and the world's experience of that great city.

Ted Kheel (1914-2010) worked for twenty-five years to help make The Gates possible. When he ultimately succeeded, Christo and Jeanne Claude granted his newly founded nonprofit, NNYN, a royalty free license to produce events and make products relating to The Gates, to further his purpose and theirs of improving New York's environment.
